Beginnings

The white blackbird

Wexford Quay, the lightship Guillemot, and the first fish.

Written on New Year’s Day, 2018. A boy on the deck of the lightship Guillemot at Wexford Quay, a folded newspaper packet of lugworm that is cold and damp on one side, and a grandfather showing him how to bait a hook. The first bass comes up on a handline and goes back over the side, too small to keep.

It is the earliest thing on this site by some distance, and the one I would put in front of you if you only read one. It ends on a question rather than an answer.
